    Understanding NEET MDS Counselling Types

Admission to MDS courses in India is not a single-window process. Depending on your rank and category, you will need to engage with different counselling authorities.

    1. All India Quota (AIQ) Counselling (50%)

Managed centrally by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), this quota includes 50% of the total MDS seats in all government dental colleges across India (except J&K, depending on current rules).

    • Who can apply: Any candidate who has qualified for NEET MDS 2026.
    • Best for: Students looking for top-tier government colleges outside their home state.

    2. State Quota Counselling (50%)

The remaining 50% of government seats and 100% of seats in private dental colleges within a state are managed by the State Directorate of Medical Education (DME).

    • Who can apply: Candidates meeting the specific domicile/residency criteria of that state.
    • Best for: Students wishing to remain in their home state or those targeting private institutions.

    3. Deemed & Central Universities (100%)

MCC also conducts 100% of the counselling for Central Universities (like BHU, AMU, and DU) and Deemed Universities (like Manipal, DY Patil, etc.).

    • Note: Deemed Universities often have higher tuition fees but offer state-of-the-art infrastructure and no domicile restrictions.

    4. Institutional & Special Quotas

    • Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS): Specifically for candidates interested in serving in the dental corps of the Army, Navy, or Air Force.
    • ESIC Quota: Reserved seats in ESIC dental hospitals for wards of insured persons.
    • NRI Quota: A specific percentage of seats in private and Deemed Universities reserved for Non-Resident Indians or NRI-sponsored candidates.

    👉FAQ Section:

    Eligibility & Registration Basics

Who is officially eligible for NEET MDS 2026 counselling?

To participate, you must have a BDS degree from a DCI-recognized institute, a valid NEET MDS scorecard, and have completed your mandatory 12-month internship by the specified cutoff date (usually March 31 or June 30, 2026).

Is separate registration required for AIQ and State rounds?

Yes. You must register on the MCC portal for All India Quota seats and separately on the respective state’s official counselling website for State Quota seats.

    Seat Allotment & Upgradation Rules

Can I upgrade my seat from Round 1 to Round 2?

Yes, “Upgradation” is permitted. You must join your Round 1 allotted college and opt for “Yes” for willingness to participate in Round 2. If a new seat is allotted in Round 2, your Round 1 seat is automatically vacated.

What happens if I don’t join my Round 2 allotted seat?

In Round 2, there is no “Free Exit.” If you are allotted a seat but fail to join, your security deposit will be forfeited. In some states, you may even be barred from further rounds.

    Fees, Deposits & Refunds

How much is the counseling security deposit?

For Government (AIQ) seats, the deposit is typically ₹25,000 for General and ₹10,000 for SC/ST/OBC. For Deemed Universities, a higher deposit of approximately ₹2,00,000 is required.

When will I get my security deposit refund?

Refunds are generally processed 2–3 months after the entire counselling process (including the Stray Vacancy round) is completed. It is sent back to the original bank account used during payment.

    Document Verification & Technicalities

What if I miss the Choice Locking deadline?

If you save your choices but forget to lock them, the system will automatically lock your last saved preferences at the end of the deadline.

Do I need an original DCI registration for counselling?

You can apply with a “Provisional Registration Certificate” during the counseling rounds, but a Permanent Registration is eventually required once you join the course.
